When we are job searching it’s all too easy to use a “shotgun” approach to recruiters & not pay enough attention to providing them with accurate information about you & your career ambitions. Pick recruiters who know your target industry & if possible have been recommended by friends & colleagues based on their good experiences.Do not work with more than 3 or 4 at one time. Tell your recruiter(s) what you want, what salary your are aiming for. Be flexible, but if there are some “must haves” take the time to make it clear.Indicate how much notice you need to make yourself available for interview & also what your current notice period is.Be honest, if you have problems with your current employer then say so, you will not be the first person to be in that situation.If you want the recruiter to be discrete, MAKE IT CLEAR. Ask for a call to discuss a vacancy BEFORE they release a copy of your CV. This helps to avoid two or more recruiters duplicating your CV to the employer, nothing turns a recruiting manager off more quickly!Always return their calls ASAP.Make sure the recruiter gives you as much information as possible on each vacancy. When you are offered an interview, the recruiter should then work with you closely as you prepare for the meeting.When you accept a job offer, send the recruiter a “thank you” card & /or a bottle of champagne!
