This afternoon I received a phone call from an accomplished sales professional. But, he wasn’t calling me to sell me something. He recently found out that he would probably be unemployed by the end of the year. And even though he has been very successful in his profession, he was concerned. I get that & I bet you do too. As the conversation progressed, I shared with him one of the best, if not the best, ways to get the job you want faster. Before I share that with you, let’s take a look at what most people do.They sit at their computer & send their resumes out online.Why?Because that’s what they’re told to do. That’s the way companies have it set up. Not for the job seekers benefit, but for theirs. So, where does the resume go? It goes into what I call the “bottomless pit of human resources.” In bigger companies, the resumes are “read” by software looking for keywords.
You don’t want that to happen. What do you want to happen?What you want to happen is for your resume to get in the hands of a hiring manager. Not an HR person, a hiring manager person. They know what they’re looking for. HR often doesn’t. They have too much to do to keep track of it all. Plus, there’s no way the average HR person cares nearly as much as the hiring manager about finding the right person… & finding him or her quickly.So, how do you get your resume into the right hands, the hiring managers hands?You do what most people will never, ever, ever do! You find out who the hiring manager is & you call her. And when you get them, or their voice mail, be prepared to “market” yourself with a sixty second or less “marketing message.” Tell them three things about your skill set & experience that will get their attention.
