Do Individual Really Best Work at Home?

Working from home sounds like such a great idea. No commute, no need for a baby sitter, just sit at home & make a living! Many times I’ve had women come to me all starry-eyed and ask me how they can get started working from home like I do. “I want to be home when my kids get home from school!” they tell me. “I’m sick of driving all morning & not getting home until after dark!” And I understand, truly I do. Having to be away from your family is really hard, & that was one of the reasons I chose to work from home in the first place.But, it’s not really that easy. Working at home is still working, & there still is no such thing as a free lunch. You still have to find some way to trade something of value that you bring to the table for income.

There are many options these days that make working from home possible, & that’s very helpful for those of us who have circumstances where working from home our best choice. For myself, my husband has Parkinson’s disease, & if I weren’t home to help take care of him, I’d have to hire someone to come in & do what I do for him at home. That being said, I am the household breadwinner, so I have to have a job.I lucked out, as my background is in medical records, & that is a job that easily translates to a work-from-home job. I’d been working from home for my company for several years before my husband’s disability made it necessary for me to come home – but I was already there! That worked out very well for me.So that’s one of the ways it can work. If your career is one that makes it feasible to telecommute, that is a really good way to get started.
