It is well known throughout the world that Britain has some of the most enchanting country house hotels in existence. What is possibly not quite so well known is that many of these historic buildings have a wealth of fireplaces that are outstanding examples of their era. A large number of these beautiful fireplaces would not be in existence today if it were not for the fact that many country hotels were originally old manor houses that were only saved or restored for the tourist industry. In past times when Britain was a force to be reckoned with a plethora of rich landowners commissioned fireplace masterpieces to be built in natural stone, gothic timber, crumbling red brick, illustrious Adam style & on rare occasions even marble. No expense was spared to impress with these legendary country properties & the fireplaces, especially in the main hall, were no exception to this overt extravagance.
Residing in what was normally a draughty & sometimes bitterly cold abode the well-heeled owners of these country houses recognised that in the unpredictable British climate a welcoming & warm hearth was an integral part of comfortable family life. In fact the larger & more grand the fireplace the more the proud owner was regarded as a man of substance by his peers. This said many of the more intimate owner managed hotels will not be averse to lighting a fire even in summer if the evenings seem chilly. There is something very special about sipping afternoon tea or savouring the dinner menu in front of a flickering warming fireplace at one our captivating countryside hotels. It is not difficult to imagine all the day to day scenes that must have taken place in front of the imposing stone mantel, the grand Victorian pillared marble or the dark oak surround that is embellished with Tudor carvings.
