Airport Hotel ? Advantage To Getting Geo Specific on Your Hotel Choice

It is not uncommon when searching for a hotel room in a large city such as Toronto, to find significant price differences between airport & downtown hotels. In some cases, this price difference can be substantial when booking for multiple nights. The question is then raised; does it make more sense to book the less expensive airport property as opposed to the downtown hotel? Let us use the example of a family of four planning a visit to Toronto in mid July for a total of five days. In this case, it may well be cheaper in the long run to book the airport hotel. A mid-level hotel in downtown Toronto in July will cost approximately $169 a night plus taxes. An airport hotel however, may cost only $119 per night. This $250 savings over the five day period can often make a decision easier to make. In the case of Toronto, the airport is approximately 30km from the downtown core or a 20 minute drive.

If this distance is not an issue for you, then it makes better financial sense to book the property which is the cheapest. Some points to consider when deciding where to stay. • How far is the airport from the downtown core? Do you really need to be downtown, or can you afford to stay outside of the downtown core in order to get a discounted rate? • All downtown Toronto hotels charge between $20 & $40 for parking per night, whereas most airport properties offer complimentary parking or a lower cost parking. For longer term stays, this can add up to large savings. • As airport properties are typically larger than downtown hotels, most offer more services for families such as pools, games rooms & other entertainment. If several of your planned activities are located outside of the downtown core, is there really a need to stay there & pay the extra cost? By taking the time to research the rates at both locations, you are apt to stretch your travel budget & perhaps be able to add activities to your itinerary you originally thought you could not afford to include.
