Many of us are deciding to take a step away from all-inclusive holidays & consider an off the beaten track vacation. This is for many reasons – increased crime in the main Caribbean resorts, sky rocketing prices, or possibly just wanting something different. What tips can help you make the best out of your stay?So much of the accommodation within Trujillo seems to be stuck under specialty hotels, with no real explanation why. This may have changed by the time you read this article, so my advice is to check both search options!Fly to Le Ceiba airport. If you have the option from your city of origin I would fly to Le Ceiba airport. This is around 2-3 hours from Trujillo & it’s a pretty easy drive. The second choice is to fly into San Pedro Sula. This is a much longer trip (7 hours at least). Also, if you fly in later in the day & have to stay over it is not the nicest city in the world, so avoid if possible! Some hotels will organize a pick up from La Ceiba. If you are not hiring a vehicle make this a pre-requisite of your hotel choice.
Hire a really sturdy vehicle. Like most off the beaten track locations, Honduras does not have the best roads, so a good vehicle is a must. If this is impossible many hotels will arrange a pick-up service from La Ceiba like I mentioned. If you cannot hire your own transportation, check that the hotel organizes trips using their own vehicle. Alternatively, check that you are near public transportation routes.Do some research on the area – Trujillo is not an all-inclusive package destination so the emphasis will be on you to know what you want to see. Although some of the hotels are owned by English speakers this is not always guaranteed. This means you may not always be able to get advice from your hotel in regards to visiting attractions. If this is a real issue for you, check that someone at your hotel speaks English.Most importantly, know what kind of accommodation you want. Trujillo has a lot to offer for many different types of visitors, but it is best to get your expectations in order… what kind of holiday do you want? Are you on a budget? Is it a family holiday?
