Britain is famous for its gardens. In fact, some of our bigger gardens are renowned world wide. As we have such a diversity of climate on this island, we are able to replicate the many different temperature regions of the world & so grow a wide variety of plants. Garden visits are big business here & there is a plethora of travel firms using cheap hotels in their packages to show people our stunning gardens.The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew are known worldwide for their wealth of plants, gardens & greenhouses, set in 121 hectares. Kew has many attractions to beguile & interest; The Palm House, The Orangery & the Princess of Wales Conservatory which opened in 1987. This has several different temperature zones, enabling a wide range of plants to be grown. The Alpine House, opened in 2006 has a revolutionary heating system which blows cold air over the plants As well as an interesting day out, Kew is also a world authority on things horticultural & its Jodrell Laboratory is used by international horticultural bodies. During the summer, Kew stages many outdoor events & gives horticultural talks throughout the year.

Not far from Kew, at Woking, Surrey is Wisley, the flagship garden of the Royal Horticultural Society. Known for its richly planted borders & its gorgeous rose gardens, it also has a state of the art new glasshouse. Bequeathed to the society in 1903, the gardens have developed into a teaching aid as well as being aesthetic. Their range of small gardens shows what can be achieved in a small space. There are rock gardens, Mediterranean gardens and glasshouses containing orchids, alpines & cacti, & a range of water gardens. They have an impressive Plant Centre, restaurants and cafes. If you are thinking of hotels near Wisley, try the Holiday Inn, Woking or the De Vere Venues, Gorse Hill in Woking.The Eden Project in Cornwall has the world’s largest greenhouse comprising a series of biomes. Each biome has its own climate. The Tropical biome covers 1.56 hectares and houses tropical plants such as bananas, coffee, bamboo & rubber. The Mediterranean biome covers 0.654 hectares and includes things such as vines, olives & various sculptures. There is also an outdoor biome which is uncovered and includes things such as lavender, hops & hemp.
