The Zoological Garden of the city of Mendoza is one of the greatest in South America. It was launched in 1903 on a blueprint of the famous landscape designer Carlos Thays, & in the beginning was located adjacent to the theater Pulgarcito. In 1940, the building of the new zoo in the city started, in its present location on the sides of Cerro de la Gloria, within San Martin Park, minutes from downtown & most Mendoza 4 stars hotels. The law, signed by the designer Daniel Ramos Correas, was extremely ambitious & original: Mendoza zoo started the concept of “open zoological garden.” The creatures were placed in huge semi-inclosures with no bars, trying to reproduce as closely as possible the typical home ground of every species. And although nowadays this modern concept was twisted by the existence of a few cages, especially for dangerous animals, the San Martín Park Zoological Garden remains a great attraction ride, one of the must-see while in the capital. The zoological garden now has a route to amble along of 4 miles long. There is an awesome colony of animals, some native, some foreign & even endangered.
In its 48 fully forested hectares live monkeys, birds, elephants, tigers, zebras, hippos, foxes, llamas, vicuna & polar bears, to mention just a small number of the 35 species. There is so much to see that a complete tour of the zoo needs more than 3 hours. The zoological garden, remindful of the relevancy of this outing, organized guided visits aimed chiefly to raising awareness of the need to help maintain the world’s wildlife & the caring for the planet. Mendoza Zoo also has an educational programme for students of careers in science, & biology. Luckily, there is an enthusiastic diffusion of the message of the zoo by the participants of the plan, who work pro bono circulating promotional brochures in schools & among those who spend their holidays in Mendoza. Mendoza has made the zoo a must visit for anyone who is temporarily or residing in Cuyo land.
