Judging Book by Its Cover : Do Hotels Chairs Matter?

From childhood we are lambasted for judging books by their covers. Our culture’s fairy tales & fables constantly implore us not to make judgments about other people or places based solely on what we see on the surface. Nevertheless, most of us have made it to adulthood without fully having shaken off the urge the judge on appearances. Obviously, with other people this is incredibly unfair, but what about businesses, restaurants or hotels? The hotel example is a very apt demonstration of how important appearances are to us, even as adults. Following a hotel stay, whether for business or pleasure, we are invariably asked by someone whether we’d recommend it.

Years of trying to avoid judging books by their covers have lead to us claim we’d base our opinion of a hotel on the service we received in to. However, whether we are comfortable admitting it or not, we are shallow beings & without realising it we have almost certainly made a judgement of the hotel within minutes of our arrival. This underlines the importance of presentation. If the hotel’s appearance isn’t up to scratch, with tatty hotel chairs & tables or dirty floors then even the best service in the world won’t redeem it. It’s official then, we do judge on appearances. It is therefore in the interests of hotel businesses to make sure they present themselves perfectly. Hotel chairs & tables in particular suffer more wear & tear than most other furniture so should be high quality, durable & well maintained. Maid & room service trolleys often cause damage to hotel walls, so the decor should be protected. Any hotel manager worth his salt knows this. We might have learned not to judge other people by their appearances, but when it comes to buying a service we haven’t. We shouldn’t feel guilty for this. In fact we should embrace it.
