Hostels have gotten a bad rap over the past few years thanks to slasher flick like Hostel. In reality, almost all hostels are safe, clean places, many with private rooms & amenities. Hostels can be a great alternative to staying in a hotel because they provide a more authentic experience at a low price. Hostels are so cheap because they are a no frills enterprise. I once stayed at a hostel in Bosnia that also housed the manager is Eighty one -year-old grandmother. She spoke nothing but Bosnian but provided many cups of tea and even nursed my friend who had the flu! A good hostel will offer activity or tours to its tenants.Staying in upscale hotels may be more comfortable, but they establish a barrier between you & the world outside.
